I previously left Active Duty in 2005 as a somewhat new mom (my oldest welches 9 months at the time) and my husband left Active Duty the same month as I did. I wasnt sure what I was supposed to do or be at that point. Having flown in combat (I deployed as a Mission Commander/Tactical Coordinator shortly after 9/11 to the Middle East) I was now a full-time stay at home mom with a spouse who was always gone for work. I felt guilty for wanting to work when I could be home. I went back to the Navy to finish my career and this second time around (retirement) I gave myself permission to breathe and take some time to figure out what works best for meWhat did your company do to help ease the transition, and how have you felt supported working here?Not applicable to me, as a one woman show As for the teaching aspect, I was recruited by a fellow veteran to teach and it has been very smooth. He has become my mentor (unofficially) at the university. Do you believe your military background has provided you with any unique perspectives or talents that aid your career today? Absolutely I joined the Navy at age 17 and it has solidified my core values. I was able to have responsibility at a very young age that I know I wouldnt have had in corporate America at the same age. Plus, that responsibility was yielded under very stressful situations. It allows me to now take a moment to reflect and observe most situations in life, my business or my teaching.Whats the first (and/or last) thing you do at work every day? First thing I do is communicate. Since I work from home, I check my messages and emails and t ake care of those ASAP. Anything that is easy to respond to gets done right away. Then I can move into work that requires my creativity. At the end of the day I review what is on my schedule for the next day, make a list of priorities and walk away to spend time with family.What about outside of work how do you most enjoy spending your time?Watching my kids grow up. I dont have them at home for too many more years, so I am really embracing all the activities and growth they are going through. I also started taking tennis lessons when I retired I have a standing lesson with nearly all the women that started in my group and they have become awesome friends.Whats the one career move youve made that youre most proud of? Starting my own business Its totally out of the norm for me but I wanted to try something new and something that isnt easy. I fly for a living, so most of that writing has been done on planes and in hotels.I knew I was in danger. Biz traveling is exhausting. If I didnt write while I traveled, 20years would go by in a blink and Id be that guy the guy with the novel, essay, memoir in his head that never actually got written down, let alone published.You have as much time as any other traveler. We all get 24 hours each day. Here are my rules for no excuse business travelingWindow seats onlyNo one asks you to move and disturbs your work. (Sidebar here No water before the flight. Otherwise, you will disturb you.)No room service They serve breakfast at 6 a.m. in most hotels. Be the first one down there. Dont worry about how you look. Room service takes 35 minutes. Eat from the buffet in five looking like a zombie and you can be back working i n your room.Onhauptplatine, dont access Wi-Fi That way, you cant be tempted by Netflix or John Oliver YouTube videos or emails that can wait. Youre in the sky to work. Gaze out the window for access to your Muse, but thats all the diversion you get until wheels down.No small talk with the attractive person next to youGet over yourself, Clooney wannabe. Youre not so hot that theyre going to changetheir connecting flight for you. This is a waste of charm and eignung work time.Fly out between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. whenever possibleAirports are ghost towns during these hours. You could arrive one hour before the flight and fly through security, allowing you to stay in your hotel and work a little longer.No going to the hotel gymEvery hotel has stairs run them. Or bring a jump rope. For strength training, I get under the bed and do push ups with the bed. (If they have high thread count linen, I get pumped) Burpees suck, and are effective, everywhere. You have plenty of space in your room. Over the course of a year, I dont sacrifice fitness, but I save hours and am back in my desk chair working while you are signing in at the spa or searching for a real gym.Bring your luggage to the gate, even if it is monstrous and there is no way on earth it is fitting in the overheadTen minutes before the flight, I promise they will announce, in plaintive tones, that they will cheerfully check your luggage for FREE to your destination and you can pick it up plane-side, eliminating the baggage claim cluster.Uber takes three minutes, cab lines just under foreverCome on, keep up.Dont board until your group is calledSit down and continue working until they do last call. There is one airplane, and you have a seat. They start boarding 30 minutes before the flight. You standing up there sighing and hovering with your group 5 ticket is an utter waste.Of course, you dont have to do any of this. You can get People magazine and compare who looks better in Stella McCartney this mon th, or play video games, or be one of those people who put masks over their faces and plugs in their ears and catch up on sleep. The bill was recently introduced by House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX).According to the bill, the director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy would be directed to carry out programs and activities to ensure that Federal science agencies and institutions of higher education receiving Federal research and development funding are fully engaging their entire talent pool, and for other purposes.In introducing the bill, Ranking Member Johnson said, The need for full engagement in STEM by women and underrepresented minorities goes beyond enabling individuals to fulfill their dream s of becoming a scientist. ur economic future relies on what we do now to nurture the STEM talent that will be necessary to meet the demands of an increasingly technological and knowledge-based economy.
